With the year coming to a close, people are reflecting on the best games they have played in the past year. There have been some incredible new releases, from adventure games like Sea of Thieves to giant action games like Shadow of the Colossus. Here are some of the top-rated games from 2018:

  • Into the Breach. This popular game from Subset Games sees the player fighting off giant monsters, fighting for the good of the planet. It’s addictive and compelling playing.
  • Monster Hunter: World. This series has come into the mainstream more recently, and with this latest addition, you will continue the fun with monster hunting. It is more polished and more slick, with plenty of wide appeal.
  • Iconoclasts. If your thing is pixel art and a sense of nostalgia for games gone by, this could be the perfect option for you. It has a more thought out storyline now, and combines games, puzzles and combat.

Detroit: Become Human – Adventure Meets Sci Fi

Posted on July 20, 2018 at 6:19 am

Detroit: Become Human features the stories of androids who feature in the story. It was released for PS4 earlier this year, and the signs are looking positive so far – it has sold more than one million copies since launch, which makes it Quantic Dreams’s most successful game to date. It is based on a technology demonstration from 2012 by the developers.

The plot can mainly be characterised as an adventure game, with characters having to collect clues and gather information. Collecting information gives you more power and you will be able to replay events. There are three main characters in the story. Connor is an android police investigator that looks for deviant androids not doing their job. Kara and Markus are housekeepers and they gain consciousness, which leads them to help others. There are various characters you can play as, meaning the story is never over – if your character dies, you can carry on as another one.

Tennis World Tour – a True to Life Take on Tennis

Posted on May 31, 2018 at 8:36 pm

How much can a video game ever really be like a sport? There are always going to be very fundamental differences, as well as quirks of gameplay that just cannot be related to the real thing. Tennis World Tour, though, is making a good go of being true to life when it comes to professional tennis.

Tennis World Tour is a much more mature version of tennis video gaming than its predecessors. Much more attention has been paid to timing the shot just right, and this will massively affect the difficult of scoring points. You will also be expected to think strategically, rather like a professional tennis player. You won’t be able to play in every tournament, and will have to decide on certain ones, focusing on the types of court you like playing on.

Tennis World Tour was released earlier this month and you can buy it on Playstation 4, Xbox One, Windows and Nintendo Switch.

Scavengers – AI Technology Making an Impact

Posted on March 23, 2018 at 6:23 pm

Scavengers is the newly announced game from new studio Midwinter Entertainment, the team behind new Halo games. It is a survival game set in an ice age, where players must decide whether to work together or attack each other in an each man for his own scenario.

The game is interesting because of its blend of player vs player and player vs environment content. It’s along the same lines as Halo 5, and it makes use of artificial intelligence to adapt the world to the playing scenario. This opens up lots of new possibilities and creates a game that feels like it is without limits.

Whilst the game is developed by Midwinter Entertainment, it will run on the SpatialOS platform from Improbable. The teams have talked about working together on the game, and have described it is a creative meeting of minds. They soon realised the solutions held in SpatialOS were perfect for the game and would really benefit players.
